The effective date for bills enacted without a safety clause is August 18, 2026, if the GA adjourns sine die on May 19, 2026
This bill amends S.A.R.S. §2-09-11 concerning the storage and transportation of firearms in motor vehicles by simplifying existing requirements for lawful firearm owners. The bill removes statutory requirements that firearms be stored in a vehicle’s trunk, placed in a locked container, or transported separately from ammunition.
Under the amended statute, a firearm and its ammunition may be transported anywhere within a motor vehicle, including the passenger compartment, provided the individual is otherwise legally permitted to possess a firearm. The bill is intended to clarify lawful transportation standards and reduce ambiguity in compliance requirements while maintaining prohibitions against reckless or unlawful handling of firearms.
The legislation preserves criminal penalties for transporting or handling a firearm in a manner that creates a substantial and unjustifiable risk to public safety and does not alter existing prohibitions on firearm possession by individuals otherwise prohibited under state or federal law.
